The 10-Minute Slab Inspection That Saves You a Failed Job
Here’s a number that should change how you work: the difference between a floor that lasts a decade and one that fails in a year is almost always decided in the first ten minutes on site — before a single machine is switched on. That ten minutes is a slab inspection, and it’s the cheapest insurance in the trade.
Most failures aren’t caused by bad technique. They’re caused by skipping the assessment and discovering the slab’s problems after you’ve committed the work. By then, the fix is far more expensive than the ten minutes that would have caught it.
The ten-minute walk
You don’t need instruments for the first pass. You need your eyes, your hand, and a phone camera. Walk the whole area and check these five things:
1. Cracks. Mark every crack. Distinguish the planned control joints (straight, regular — these stay) from shrinkage cracks (random, often need filling) from structural movement cracks (wide, stepped, growing — stop, this is an engineer’s problem). Photograph each with a coin for scale.
2. Surface strength. Drag your hand across the slab. If it leaves a grey dusty smear, the surface is weak. A weak surface won’t polish well and a coating won’t grip it. This one check tells you whether the job is even viable as specified.
3. Contamination. Look for the silent killers: cure compound (a waxy film from the pour), old paint or coatings, oil or grease. Any of these left in place will seal into your finish and ruin it. A contamination you don’t find now becomes a failure you can’t explain later.
4. Moisture signs. Look for efflorescence (white powdery salts), dark damp patches, or staining near external walls and drains. These are hints that moisture may be a problem — worth a proper test before you specify any coating.
5. Flatness and defects. Sight down the slab and look for honeycombing, voids, bumps or recessed panels. These get exposed by polishing, not hidden — so you need to know they’re there before you promise a finish.
Why the ten minutes pays for itself
Here’s the arithmetic that should make this a non-negotiable habit:
- Ten minutes of inspection costs you nothing but discipline.
- A slab problem found after you’ve ground the floor costs you a re-grind, a repair, a lost day, and sometimes the job.
- A slab problem found after handover costs you a callback, a repair under warranty, and your reputation.
The inspection doesn’t just save money — it protects you. When you’ve documented the slab’s condition with photos before the work, you have a record. If the client later says “you missed that crack,” you have the photo that shows you saw it, assessed it, and flagged it. That record is the difference between a professional and a liability.
Make it a habit, not a decision
The problem with inspections is that they’re easy to skip when you’re behind schedule or the job “looks fine.” So don’t leave it to judgement. Make it a fixed step with a one-page sheet:
