Polyaspartic vs Epoxy: When the Fast Cure Is Worth the Premium
Walk into any flooring supplier and you’ll hear the pitch: “Polyaspartic — it cures in hours, not days.” For a lot of jobs, that’s the entire argument. But it’s also the most expensive option in the room, so the real question is never “what’s the best floor?” — it’s “is the speed worth the premium on this job?”
What you’re actually buying
Epoxy and polyaspartic both give you a hard, chemical-resistant, seamless floor. The differences that matter in practice:

So what is the premium actually buying? Downtime. That’s the whole value proposition. If your client can’t close the floor for a week, polyaspartic turns a week-long project into a day or two.
When the speed is worth it
Polyaspartic earns its premium when downtime is the client’s real cost:
- Retail and restaurants that trade during the day and can only work at night or over a weekend.
- Warehouses and facilities that can’t stop operations for a week.
- Projects with a hard handover date — an event, a lease start, a compliance deadline.
- External or UV-exposed areas where pure epoxy would yellow.
In these cases, the cost of the client’s downtime (lost trade, missed revenue, a delayed opening) almost always dwarfs the material premium. The fast cure is cheap insurance.
When it’s not worth it
On the other hand, if the floor can be closed for a week without much cost — a vacant unit, a new build with no occupier, a back-of-house area — then polyaspartic’s speed is solving a problem the client doesn’t have. You’re paying a premium for hours of cure they’d never notice. On those jobs, a quality epoxy gives you 90% of the result for a fraction of the cost, with a more forgiving application window.
The application caveat
Here’s the part the pitch doesn’t always mention: polyaspartic’s short pot life and fast cure mean the applicator window is tight. A less experienced crew will struggle — the material gels before they’ve finished a section, and you get visible, permanent patches. Epoxy is far more forgiving of a slower crew.
So the decision has two parts:
- Is the downtime cost real? If yes, the premium is justified.
- Can your crew work at the speed polyaspartic demands? If not, the “fast” system becomes your problem.
The takeaway: Don’t choose polyaspartic because it’s the “better” floor. Choose it when the schedule is the client’s real cost and your crew can keep up. Otherwise, epoxy is the smarter value — and the client will never know the difference.
